THE EFFECT OF COMORBIDITY ON FREQUENT HOSPITALIZATION IN PATIENTS WITH COPD

Aim: Comorbidities such as cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, and psychological disorders are commonly reported in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD often coexists with other diseases that have may a significant impact on prognosis. The study was undertaken to identify common comorbid diseases and to assess hospitalization in COPD.

Material and Methods: Between August 2011- February 2012, the frequency of the comorbidities were analysed in 100 patients with COPD group C and D diagnosed according to the GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) 2011. Age, sex, smoking history, sputum culture, C-reactive ptrotein (CRP) level, administered treatment, frequency of hospitalization and comorbid conditions were recorded.

Results: There were 84 males and 16 females patients. Mean (± SD) age of the patients were 69.5±9.18 years. The most common comorbid diseases were cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, cancer and pulmonary embolism.

Conclusion: Comorbidity in patients with COPD were more frequent hospitalizations.
