Extramedullary hematopoesis is the production of blood cells at a location rather than the bone marrow and can be seen as a compansatory mechanism during the hematologic diseases that are characterized with hemolysis, such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease, myelofibrosis and hereditary spherocytosis. Intrathoracic extramedullary hematopoisesis is a rare condition. In this study, 22-year-old female thalassemia intermedia patient who was referred to our clinic with a posterior mediastinal mass and diagnosed as a extramedullary hematopoiesis by transthorasic fine-needle aspiration biopsy is presented.
